The release of the movie "The Golden Compass" is upon us and much discussion of what to do or how to respond in Christian circles has already occured. There is something inside of me that wants to rebel against the well intentioned boycott solution that often gets mentioned. Now, I have not decided yet whether or not I will go see the movie...but personally I think I would like it, at least this first of the trilogy.
One thing that history has told us over and over again is that boycotting often just puts the spotlight on the subject. I came across the Christianity Today artice
found at (http://www.christianitytoday.com/movies/commentaries/fearnotthecompass.html)
and invite you to read the response the author gives to Not fear the Compass. I like his thoughts and hope you will chose to read them too.
A bible passage that I believe we always need to keep in mind is found in 1 John 4:16--18 (NIV)
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
Sigh. If only Pulman (author of The Golden Compass) had this understanding of God instead of the misunderstanding he does have of Him.
Let me what you think and if you plan to see the movie version of the Golden Compass or not.
Roger, over and out

Thanks for shareing, Would like to get lost in that movie for a couple of hours but I don't plan on that happening and I'm devinatly not going to support it if it has all those problems mentioned (I'm not willing to pay to see it, thats not to say I never will see it).
I don't plan on seeing it at the movies. If it ever comes on the TV, I might watch it, but It just doesn't seem like something I'd like, even though I like fiction/fantasy type movies. Unfortunately, it probably is the attention the movie is getting that makes it more sinister than it would be had it not been so flaunted. Afterall, for most it would probably have been just another cartoon fantasy movie with a meaningless life application.
I really don’t want to support those works financially. Having read some of the works of C.S. Lewis when I was young and some of his writings recently that I am older I really don’t want to support those either. The older I get the more I find myself limiting my time and resources and concentrating my priorities to those that are highest on the list giving them my full attention.
Boycotts rarely work; I think we should boycott boycotts! But then, if enough people choose not to see The Golden Compass in its original release, then they won't make movies of the other two books, both of which are much more anti-religion. I'm with Clifford. I'll save up for March 16 and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. I like the book upon which that movie is based!
I would probably like it to if I read it but I haven't read it or seen the movie. I have read a lot of his stuff maybe it was the old stuff I don't know (it was short stuff) he has written so much stuff and maybe one day when I retire or something I will read that book and/or see that movie, it is not a priority. . . I am glad you got something "good" out of his work. best wishes to you and yours (seeyalatter)
I watched “Happy Feet” and those of you who have been there and seen it are aware of the parallels. I will not draw your attention to them because they are so obvious are they not?
ps, because there is no "christian music" with instruments there should be no objections from the elected elders of any of the "more heavy handed and contoling" gongergations if we watch it together?
I thought everyone was avoiding commenting on it in hopes that it would just "go away." I did not know it was banninated or vetoed or anything formal. I wanted to see it soooo bad when I first saw the commercial. Some people are just too up tight to get over the fact that its not going to influence anyone strong in the faith. With the background information floating around, no one would see it with nieve eyes. I agree that financially we have a Christian responsibility. I believe God is not of the opinion that we should give to the atheist what belongs to the atheist.
I believe that the (books and) movies mentioned can useful for simulate thinking and if you have that kind of free time and free neurons. . . GO FOR IT. I really find myself limiting the use of my resources; time, effort, money etc. and I don’t believe it is wrong for any one to take in that kind of information if you and your’s are ok with that. Personally I am don’t want to pay for it’s elimination or destruction (as it could be an educational thing) yet I do not foresee myself supporting it with my time or effort. ‘I will not be paying for it’ and would not encourage it’s production. There is so much that requires my attention and I have enough trouble as is.
